Adopted children and adolescents constitute 2% of the population under 18, making them a very small minority in American society. Large-scale, community-based, studies of the behavior problems and adjustment difficulties of adopted children and adolescents have found small differences from their nonadopted peers, yet they are greatly overrepresented in their use of mental health services.  The field of adoption research has been debating and investigating the explanations for this marked discrepancy for decades. Their conclusions rarely reach clinicians who work with this population, much less the general public.  This talk will address widely-held perceptions of adoption, the evidence that supports or refutes them, and their implications for clinical work with adopted young people and their families.  The content has relevance for clinicians working with adults touched by adoption as well.
