WPS Meeting: Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) and Disorders of Overcontrol

Presenters: Joy Hoffman, PhD and Jade Kobayashi, PhD, LLP

RO DBT is an evidence-based treatment that targets disorders of overcontrol (i.e., excessive ability to inhibit urges, impulses, delay gratification, and focus emotions inward). Similar to traditional DBT, RO DBT incorporates dialectical principles and is structured for both individual and group skills delivery. However, RO DBT has fundamental differences from traditional DBT, including its primary therapeutic target of improving social signaling and social connectedness, flexible-mind, and radical openness (seeking the things we want to avoid, in order to learn).

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe the rationale for RO DBT's development

2) Summarize what is a disorder of overcontrol and the role of biotemper

3) Understand similarities and differences between traditional and RO DBT (and indicators for which method to use when)

4) Be able to apply the 4 key deficits of overcontrol

5) Explain how to focus on social signalling as opposed to examining internal experiences when working with disorders of overcontrol

6) List the differences between radical openness (RO DBT) and radical acceptance (traditional DBT)

7) Structure of RO DBT treatment, including basic overview of RO DBT skills training
