The talk explores the clinical and theoretical foundations of hypnotherapy as an evidence-based approach to managing chronic pain. Drawing on decades of research, the presentation highlights the efficacy of hypnosis in treating conditions such as chronic low back pain, cancer-related pain, fibromyalgia, sickle cell disease, osteoarthritis, temporomandibular disorders, and more.
Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the biopsychosocial components of pain and how hypnotherapy can be integrated into treatment planning. Emphasis will be placed on Langerian mindfulness and its application within hypnotherapeutic practice.
Participants will emerge with both theoretical knowledge and practical strategies for using hypnosis in diverse pain management contexts.
Hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of chronic pain conditions. Research supports its efficacy in managing chronic low back pain and pain associated with cancer (Spiegel & Bloom, 1983; Elkins & Cheung), osteoarthritis (Gay, Philippot, & Luminet, 2002), sickle cell disease (Dinges et al., 1997), temporomandibular disorder (Drangsholt & LeResche, 1990; Winocur et al., 2002; Abrahamsen, Zachariae, & Svensson, 2009), and fibromyalgia (Haanen et al., 1991; Castel et al., 2007). Hypnotherapy has also proven effective in addressing noncardiac chest pain (Jones et al., 2006) and disability-related chronic pain (Jensen et al., 2005; Jensen et al., 2011).Effective hypnotherapy for chronic pain involves a comprehensive approach that includes biological, psychological, and interpersonal considerations during assessment and case formulation.
