Rural Psychology Task Force
The Rural Psychology Task Force formed in a rather serendipitous manner a little more than ten years ago. Several MPA members who practiced in rural locations throughout the state met at one of MPA’s CEU events and we decided to pool our resources to address concerns of rural psychologists throughout the state. We began offering CEU events in Northern Michigan in both the Spring and Fall. Our group consisted of veteran psychologists with a wide variety of specializations including integrated care, hospital based outpatient practices, veteran’s affairs, and substance abuse. Our membership covered an area from Hillsdale to Ironwood. With the support and encouragement of MPA leadership (several of our members are board officers) we attracted interest and followership from downstate members. In some recent years, we have partnered with Northern Lakes Community Mental Health and Forest View Hospital in offering CEU events. The members of the task force also have a consultation group that meets bimonthly and focuses on case conferences. In the past year, there have been some overtures from APA to have us participate in their national rural psychology videoconferences. In the words of a popular song: “We’ve only just begun.”. Please join us at our next rural psychology CEU event.
